Two Former Premiers, One Shared Conversation

In this second annual Friends United Reconciliation Talk, Nancy Regan welcomes the Hon. Rodney MacDonald and the Hon. Iain Rankin to the Friends United International Convention Centre in Unama’ki, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

Although they come from different political backgrounds, both speak about reconciliation as a shared responsibility. The conversation begins with their Cape Breton roots, their friendship, and the way Friends United creates a respectful space for dialogue across communities, political perspectives and lived experiences.

Reconciliation Through Listening and Action

A central theme of the interview is listening. Rodney MacDonald reflects on his long connection to Friends United and on how the initiative grew from Rolf Bouman’s early vision into a wider platform for Indigenous artists, cultural education and reconciliation.

Iain Rankin speaks about the importance of Indigenous voices in public policy, including language, representation, Two-Eyed Seeing, and the need to include Mi’kmaq perspectives in institutions and decision-making.

Together, they return to the idea that reconciliation cannot remain symbolic. It needs acknowledgement, understanding and action.

Indigenous Art, Language and Public Visibility

The conversation also explores how Indigenous art and language can change public spaces and public awareness. Rodney MacDonald reflects on the importance of seeing First Nations artwork in airports, schools, offices and public institutions.

Iain Rankin discusses the Mi’kmaq welcome message at the Canso Causeway and the importance of language as a sign of respect, recognition and cultural renewal. The discussion connects this symbolism with larger questions of education, identity, pride and responsibility.

Youth, Education and the Next Generation

Both former premiers speak about their own youth in Cape Breton and what they learned — or did not learn — about Indigenous communities when they were young.
