Friends United was created to support Indigenous artists on their spiritual, artistic and entrepreneurial journeys.
Narrated by Nancy Regan, this short video brings together Rolf Bouman and Friends United artists to describe a place built around art, culture, mentorship, belonging and the preservation of Indigenous stories, traditions and ways of life.

Supporting Artists from Concept to Creation
In this short Friends United video, Rolf Bouman describes the mission that has guided the project from the beginning: supporting Indigenous artists on their spiritual, artistic and entrepreneurial journeys.
That support can look different for every artist. It may include help with conceptualization, materials, canvas, paint, carving tools or even red cedar logs from British Columbia. The artist leads the process, while Friends United helps create the conditions in which the work can grow.
A Cultural Home in Unama’ki, Cape Breton
The video also introduces the Friends United International Convention Centre, a 24,000-square-foot space dedicated to showcasing and preserving Indigenous culture, traditions, heritage and art.
Located in Unama’ki, Cape Breton, the centre is presented not only as a building, but as a cultural home — a place where artists can live, create, share stories and become part of a wider Friends United family.
Art, Culture and Preservation
Throughout the video, Indigenous artists are shown as storytellers, knowledge keepers and creators. Through carving, painting, oral history and work with both recycled and new materials, they share culture, memory and lived experience.
Friends United’s work is described as the preservation of more than art. It is also the preservation of Indigenous messages, relationships, ways of life and the everyday conversations that carry those teachings forward.
Artist-in-Residence, Belonging and Transformation
A central theme is the Artist-in-Residence program. Through this initiative, Friends United artists can live and create at the centre while being supported by a community built on trust, respect and belonging.
Several voices in the video speak about confidence, healing, family, legacy and the power of being believed in. Friends United is described as a place where Indigenous people can express themselves from the heart.
