Friends United Book – Volume 1

Printed in 2011, the Friends United Book – Volume 1 brings together artwork by eight of the early Friends United artists alongside photographs and records of meetings in Canada and Europe. It offers a glimpse into the art, relationships and dialogue that helped shape the early years of Friends United.

About the Friends United Book

The Friends United Book – Volume 1 was created to introduce the work of eight Indigenous artists to a wider audience while encouraging communication, dialogue and greater understanding between First Nations people and people from other cultures.

The book features artwork by David J. Brooks, Fancy PeterPaul, Lorne A. Julien, Chelsea Brooks, Darren Julian, Amanda Julian, Norman PeterPaul and Sandra Simon. Alongside the artwork, it includes an introduction by Rodney J. MacDonald, a preface by Rolf Bouman, commentary in English and German, and photographs documenting meetings in Canada and Europe.

Printed in 2011, the book reflects an early stage in the development of Friends United. Art was already at the centre of the initiative, but so were personal relationships, meetings and conversations between people from different backgrounds.

The book and project were produced without government financial assistance or other subsidies and were sponsored by companies belonging to the Bouman Group.
