Darren Julian – Indigenous Painter
Darren Julian is an Indigenous painter whose spiritual artwork brings together people, animals, landscapes, and stories connected to Mi’kmaq culture. A Friends United artist from Wagmatcook, he developed his own expressive style after beginning to paint as a teenager.

Darren Julian paints faces, people, animals, and landscapes through a distinctive spiritual perspective. His paintings use symbolic imagery, vivid colour, and connections between human life and the natural world to tell stories rooted in culture, identity, transformation, and unity.
Work and Legacy
Darren Julian began painting as a teenager, inspired by his father, artist James Julian. His work developed into a personal spiritual style centred on people, animals, landscapes, and stories of the Mi’kmaq people.
His connection with Friends United began in 2011, when founder Rolf Bouman purchased one of his paintings. Friends United later supported Darren in establishing a small gallery where he could present his own work alongside paintings by his wife, Friends United artist Amanda Julian.
Art also connects Darren with his family. His wife Amanda Julian is a Friends United artist, and his late mother, Sandra Simon, was a respected Mi’kmaq quillwork artist and mentor.
