Charles Chisholm & Rolf Bouman – Photography & Painting Collaboration
Charles Chisholm and Rolf Bouman developed a long-running collaboration combining Rolf’s photography with Charles’ detailed painting. Over approximately two decades, photographs of people, wildlife and the landscapes of Cape Breton and Nova Scotia became references for a wide range of paintings.
A Collaboration Through Photography and Painting
Rolf Bouman first met Charles Chisholm in 1994, when Rolf purchased several of Charles’ paintings. Charles was known for highly detailed paintings of landscapes, seascapes, wildlife and people, while Rolf was frequently photographing Cape Breton and other parts of Nova Scotia.
Their shared interests gradually developed into an artistic collaboration. Charles began asking Rolf to photograph particular subjects and details that he could use as references for paintings. Over approximately 20 years, the two collaborated on around 250 paintings.
Their projects included a Louisbourg series, barn scenes, wildlife, rural landscapes and eventually a First Nations-related series. The collection presented here offers examples of that wider collaboration and, in several cases, allows the original photograph and resulting painting to be viewed together.

The following three paintings return to those familiar themes. Each was also created from a photograph taken by Rolf Bouman, demonstrating that their collaboration extended far beyond a single series or subject.
