James Jacko – First Nations Painter
James Jacko is a First Nations painter from Manitoulin Island, Ontario, whose colourful works explore creation, spirituality, nature and ancestral connections. A self-taught artist, he develops his paintings through visions and draws inspiration from family, Elders and the world around him.

James Jacko’s paintings combine vibrant colours with spiritual imagery, people, animals, nature and ancestral connections. His richly detailed compositions often move between earthly and spiritual worlds, reflecting themes of creation, prayer, memory and relationships with the natural world.
Work and Legacy
James Jacko’s artistic practice grew from family influences, personal visions and a lifelong relationship with painting. Beginning in 1977, he developed his work as a self-taught artist while drawing inspiration from Elders, his father’s work as a muralist and wood carver, and his mother’s traditional craftwork.
His paintings continue to form part of the Friends United collection, with his artwork also displayed at the Friends United International Convention Centre in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
