About Jerry Whitehead
The Art of Jerry Whitehead
Jerry Whitehead’s paintings are characterized by strong colour, repeated shapes and expressive figures. The works shown at Friends United demonstrate a vivid visual language in which human figures, movement and pattern are brought together across the composition.
His paintings combine bold contrasts with densely arranged forms, creating works that feel both highly structured and energetic.
Work and Legacy
Jerry Whitehead’s work has developed through many stages, while powwows and powwow dancers have remained a consistent theme throughout his artistic career. He has described his early encounters with dancers as a lasting influence and as a subject through which he could express aspects of his culture while continuing to develop his artistic language.
His approach has never remained fixed. Over time, Whitehead experimented with different materials and techniques, including beadwork incorporated into paintings and textured canvases, before developing the vivid, increasingly abstract compositions associated with much of his later work. He has resisted restricting his work to a single stylistic label, instead emphasizing continued change and adaptation.
Family has also been an important influence in his life and art. Whitehead has connected his interest in colour and making to memories of his mother’s brightly coloured braided rugs, his grandmother’s work with hides, and the encouragement he received as a young artist. Family themes became increasingly present in his paintings as his own life developed.
